MANILA, June 8, 2015— “Your Face Sounds Familiar” grand winner Melai Cantiveros donated Php 1 million of her prize money to a church’s social action program.
The 27-year old comedian, who won P2 million after bagging ABS-CBN’s singing and impersonation competition for celebrities, presented the cheque to the Diocese of Marbel Social Action Center.
The money will be used for the diocese’s “Alay Kapwa” programs on emergency response, sustainable agriculture, livelihood and food security, and advocacy programs such as support to farmers, environment protection and other campaigns.
Alay Kapwa is the nationwide Lenten evangelization action program of the CBCP, instituted through the National Secretariat for Social Action (Nassa), also known as Caritas Philippines.
Nassa national director Archbishop Rolando Tirona thanked Cantiveros, a native of General Santos City in South Cotabato, for choosing the Diocese of Marbel as her beneficiary.
“We assure her that this amount would truly go a long way in helping the poorest of the poor, particularly in the provinces of South Cotabato, Saranggani and Sultan Kudarat, and victims of natural disasters,” Tirona said.
Nassa also has an on-going campaign called “40 4d4 (Forty for the Poor)” in celebration of its 40th founding anniversary.
The project hopes to gather Php4 million this year to empower the poor and marginalized women through self-help group (SHeG) micro-entrepreneurship. (CBCPNews)
