PARAÑAQUE City, May 15, 2014—The Redemptorist Multimedia Staff (RMMS) of the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (Baclaran Church), in partnership with the Pauline Institute of Asia (PICA), is scheduled to hold the “Websites and Social Media Reflection” workshop Saturday, May 17, at the Grogan Hall.

More and more young people are getting continually exposed to the online world and with it a host of issues like cyber-bullying, online violence, pornography and the like. (Photo: CBCP News)

As part of its volunteers’ formation/education program this summer, the RMMS organized the workshop to educate users, particularly the youth, on the possible risks and harms of unguided media use.

It aims to give participants an overview of what average children do online and critical awareness on important issues that pose grave dangers.

These include internet addiction, cyber-bullying, intrusion of privacy, online “sexualizing”, online violence, “sexting” (a combination of the words sex and text), and other issues.

PICA is expected to report on the facts and figures surrounding mobile phone use in the Philippines.

It also plans to give an in-depth lecture on television viewing and how this activity affects brain development in ways people do not realize.

Attendees will receive tips on the intelligent use of the internet and cell phones, as well as simple guidelines for critical TV viewing.

A reflection on the relationship between “Media, Me & God” is set to end the workshop. (Raymond A. Sebastián)
