MANILA, September 25, 2014 — The University of Santo Tomas Martyrs’ Week activities, spearheaded by the UST Theological Society, included special prayers for the persecuted Christians in Iraq and Syria
On September 22, the Thomasian community participated in a Mass for Peace, followed by a Prayer for Peace and Release of Doves in remembrance of Christians in countries such as Iraq and Syria, who have become victims of the violence perpetrated by the fundamentalist Muslim group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
Prior to the week-long university tribute, Fr. Emilio Platti, O.P. gave a symposium on “Islam at the Crossroads: Understanding the various tendencies of Muslim in relation to the West and Christianity” on September 11, 2014.
On the Feast of St. Lorenzo Ruiz, September 26, the mass offerings during the closing Eucharistic celebration to be celebrated by Fr. Rodel Aligan will benefit the victims in Iraq for the “Tulong Tomasino para sa Iraq” project of the Simbahayan Community Development office.
The week-long celebration of the Thomasian Martyrs’ Week carries the theme “UST Martyrs: Heroes of Faith, Called to Serve”. (Vanessa Puno)
