MANILA, March 22, 2015 — The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) celebrates what is often called “the mother of all sciences” with its Philosophy Week from March 23 to 27, 2015.
Fr. Filemon dela Cruz, OP, the Vice-Rector for Religious Affairs will discuss St. Tomas Aquinas’ thoughts on philosophy in a forum themed “The Relevance of the Philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas in Seminary Formation” on March 27 at the UST Martyrs’ Hall.
There will also be a Faculty of Philosophy Students’ Forum (FPSF) Exhibit called “Fides et Ratio,” or Faith and Reason, which will feature St. Catherine of Alexandria, patron saint of the Faculty of Philosophy and also the second patron of the university. The said exhibit aims to make her more known in the Thomas community, especially to university students.
The main idea of the exhibit, which will be held at the Tan Yan Kee building, can be summed up with the saying, “Faith alone is not enough neither reason alone is enough for us to attain a correct knowledge of God. Both are needed in order for us to attain a correct knowledge of God.”
Also present in the May 23 to 27 exhibit are St. Augustine and St. Anselm, as well as philosophers who are recognized defenders of faith though not Christian, such as Avicenna (Ibn-Sina), and Averroes (Ibn Rushd).
The FPSF also resumes publication of the official newsletter of the Faculty of Philosophy, The Owl, on March 27 after ceasing publication for a time.
Kicking off the entire celebration is a Eucharistic celebration on March 23.
Other activities will include poem and On-the-spot Essay Writing contests, and a sportsfest. (Vanessa M. Puno/CBCPNews)
