MANILA, Oct. 26, 2016 – Going beyond the usual classical repertoire, a group of musicians decided to give an Original Philippine Music (OPM) concert was held Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Albertus Magnus Auditorium of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Manila.

Conducted by Jedrick Itugot, the UST Woodwind Ensemble performed homegrown hits at the “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika: An All OPM Concert.” Itugot is an orchestral conducting student from the Conservatory of Music of UST.

In God’s plan

“Maybe, this is all in God’s plan”, said music theatre student Demie Fresco, noting the postponing of the concert due to Typhoon Lawin that recently ravaged areas and provinces in Northern Luzon. Hailing from Sultan Kudarat, Fresco was a finalist in The Voice Season 2, under the team of singer and actress Sarah Geronimo, making it until the Knockout Rounds.

Aside from Fresco, Glenn Aquias performed as cellist. Coming from a family of musicians, he is part of the 5th generation of music-loving Aquiases. He is also a semi-finalist in a daily noontime show’s Music Hero, talent competition for young musicians.

New taste to classical music

In an interview with CBCP News, Itugot said the ensemble decided to add a “new taste to our musical style,” aside from playing signature classics.

Itugot, who was one of the founders of the ensemble in 2014, arranged the song “We Are All God’s Children” performed by the UST Symphony Orchestra, Liturgikon Vocal Ensemble, and Coro Tomasino with pop singer Jamie Rivera for Pope Francis’ visit to UST in January 2015.

Because of a very successful OPM concert, the ensemble was invited by the Ballet Philippines to do the whole concert thrice more. Details of these repeat performances will be announced on their official Facebook page. (Carl Jamie Simple S. Bordeos / CBCP News)
