MANILA, Aug. 25, 2015 – TV María, the country’s first and only Catholic television network, looks forward to delivering programs and services to a broader audience through “free-to-air” broadcasting, with shows catering especially to children and the youth, Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), housewives, and other groups, in different Philippine languages.

“Another milestone has been reached in our efforts at further improving the TV channel: TV María is ready for direct broadcasting via internet,” announced Fr. Joselito L. Jopson, TV María director, in a statement.

He reported TV María’s application with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) submitted in 2014 is now being processed, and the Catholic network is only waiting for an available channel slot.

Live programs

With the acquisition of this digital TV channel, the priest shared during a recent meeting with contributors that plans are already underway to air regular live programs.

So far, the Catholic channel has started airing live the 12:30 p.m. daily Mass at the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo .

Before the installation of the Playbox system, Jopson pointed out live programming was possible only through web streaming.

5 channels

According to the priest, who also serves as executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)’s Episcopal Commission on Social Communications (ECSC), a digital TV channel may be split into five channels.

He explained this feature will enable TV María to create “subchannels” that can specialize in various content based on category or target market segments.

It means that besides the mother channel itself, a daughter TV María channel may be dedicated to programs for children, another to lifestyle programs, another to news, documentaries, series, and so on.

TV María by region

Jopson boasted the proposed expansion also includes establishment of even more localized brandings of TV María in the different regions of the country.

The priest expressed hope that in the near future there will be a TV María – Davao, a TV María – Cebu, a TV María – Iloilo, and so on.

While airing the main content and flagship programs of TV María proper, he said the regional channels are expected to produce local news and programs in their respective vernaculars.

TV María is Channel 1 on Dream Satellite, Channel 96 on Destiny, and Channel 160 on Sky Cable.

Those who have no access to TV María are advised to contact their cable TV providers. (Raymond A. Sebastián / CBCP News)
