TAGUM, Davao del Norte, Aug. 13, 2015 – The Diocese of Tagum will be hosting on Oct. 19 to 24 the first ever Inter-Clergy National Basketball Tournament (ICNBT) dubbed the “Support and Shoot for the Poor”.
“This basketball clergy competition becomes a celebration and expression of support from and among clergy from 20 arch/dioceses to raise funds for the poor…and marginalized sectors of the Philippines society. It is also a way of recognizing the other potential of the clergy through sports, particularly basketball, providing opportunities to advance the advocacies for the poor,” said Tagum Social Action Director, Fr. Emskie Luego.
The event aims to support the fund-raising campaign of the Alay Kapwa program of the National Secretariat for Social Action, Justice and Peace (NASSA) that will benefit 40 deserving poor communities.
He added the first inter-clergy national basketball tournament was initiated and presented by NASSA as one of their culminating activities for the Year of the Poor celebration.
Winners will receive monetary prizes and plaques – Php1 million for the champion team, Php 500,000 for 1st runner up and Php300,000 for the 2nd runner up.
“To be able to get the needed amount for the prizes, Tagum diocese and the organizing committee is now looking for sponsors to help defray the expenses on prizes. Caritas Manila and Radyo Veritas have [offered to] to assist in looking and tapping for sponsors,” Luego added.
