MANILA, June 4, 2015– Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle called on young people not to be afraid of marriage.
He said, in a recent radio interview, that married life is “beautiful” and Catholics should not be afraid to discover it in the Sacrament of Matrimony.
“The mission of married people is still the same: to love like Christ. And in that love, be open to life, be involved in the community, especially in the Church that is the Body of Christ. That is why it is such a beautiful sacrament. Let us not be afraid of it,” Tagle told church-run Radio Veritas in Filipino.
What matters most, he said, is the psychological, spiritual and emotional preparation for such a lifetime commitment.
Pope Francis earlier noted how many young people are afraid of marriage because of the impression that it carries a huge risk of failure.
In 2012, the National Statistics Coordination Board reported a declining number of Filipinos getting married during the past decades.
The NSCB data showed that the number of registered marriages has dropped by 13 percent from 559,162 in 2001 to 482,480 in 2010. (Roy Lagarde/CBCPNews)
