SAN PEDRO CITY, Sept. 29, 2014 – Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal G. Tagle, DD visited and shared joy and blessings with the elderly wards of the Mary Mother of Mercy Home for the Elderly and Abandoned Foundation(MMMHEAF) on the institution’s 20th Foundation’s Anniversary, September 16.
The prelate was the principal guest and presider during the concelebrated mass and solemn blessing of the newly-expanded and furnished Mother Mercy Chapel inside the elderly home’s compound during the occasion.
He was assisted by Laguna Diocesan Bishop Buenaventura M. Famadico, DD and Imus, Cavite prelate Bishop Reynaldo Evangelista, DD, together with some 17 priests and a deacon.
The cardinal mingled well with the elderly tenants of the house and blessed them as he also posed for picture-taking a few minutes after the Holy Eucharist celebration which took place at 4:00 p.m.
He focused on the meaning of “church” during the holy mass at the chapel, which was filled to capacity with friends of the institution, nuns, benefactors, the institution’s Board of Directors, priests, and political leaders.
During the post-communion message Dra. Mercedes “Ched” M. Oliver, the principal donor of the home, said, “God is the provider of this house. Before we ask for help, they (help) come at a time we need them.”
Oliver called the foundation “a gift from the Lord for 20 years”, adding that it has served more than 400 elderly people, some of whom have since left, and some 125 of whom have died.
“Those who stayed with us we continued to provide them with our spiritual care with the help of the priests and materials with the help of the sisters (Missionary Sister of St. Francis Xavier) from Mayanmar,” she added.
Oliver said those elderly wards they have accommodated were not only given total physical, spiritual care, but also given proper Christian burials in Oliver’s own memorial park.
Dra. Ched, as she is fondly known, appealed to would-be partners to help the poor and neglected elderly saying, “Please believe that God who is not outdone in generosity will repay you. Please don’t hesitate to help the foundation so that you may share in the blessings we received in caring for the elderly and abandoned.” (Fr. Romy Ponte)
