MANILA, Sept. 2, 2015 – The environment can be rehabilitated if people will stop wanting than what is enough, a Franciscan climate justice advocate brother said yesterday.
In order to safeguard and restore the environment, people should live not beyond “sapat spirituality”, said Bro. Angel Ace Cortez, OFM, during the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.
“It is saddening that our needs are far beyond what we [really] need,” he said. “As a result, in the same manner nature takes things from us.”
There is a pressing need to realize man’s huge climate debt, Cortez noted.
“We are in the middle of experiencing a lot of climate change effects,” he said. “That’s why we need to call for climate justice now.”
According to Cortez, “ecological conversion” of the people is needed to preserve and safeguard the environment and stabilize climate conditions.
The World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation should inspire every believer to “renew and reaffirm” his commitment to his “personal vocation as steward of creation,” he said.
It is also a time to “praise and thank God for His wonderful masterpiece that he entrusted” man to care for, Cortez said.
According to the Franciscan, people should ask God’s help to protect Mother Earth and His forgiveness for ecological sins. (Oliver Samson / CBCP News)
