MANILA, May 29, 2015— A Catholic priest called on politicians not to “use the dead” out of delicadeza in their propaganda.
Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive secretary of Caritas Philippines, made the appeal after a coffin with the name of Mayor TJ Rodriguez of Capas, Tarlac, has been making the rounds in social media.
He said what the mayor did was in “bad taste” and unbecoming of a public servant.
“Respect the dead. Just help without advertising because that’s when sincerity enters,” Gariguez said.
Netizens described the mayor as “epal”, a coined term for attention-seeking politicians who take credit for government projects and programs as if these were their personal initiatives.
With just a year before the national elections, the priest said such a move is commonly used as a campaign strategy to ensure recognition and name recall.
“It really mirrors the rotten political system in our country,” Gariguez said. (CBCPNews)
