MANILA, Sept. 29, 2014— A Catholic priest was chosen as this year’s most outstanding cooperative leader in Metro Manila.
The award was conferred on Fr. Anton Pascual during the 1st Metro Manila Cooperative Congress held at the SM MOA Complex in Pasay City on September 26.
The executive director of Caritas Manila bested around 1,000 other cooperative leaders who gathered to participate in the event.
“I’m thankful for this award. Thank God that the importance of cooperatives was recognized,” Pascual said.
The priest said the diverse strengths of cooperatives can help spur not just the economic growth, but also social growth.
“[The] cooperative is among the programs of the Church and it’s in the Catholic social teaching. It’s a self-help organization and not dole-out to help the poor,” Pascual said.
He added that cooperatives cannot provide the whole answer to poverty and economic injustice, but they are part of the answer.
“Cooperatives are economic empowerment organizations. It’s not an NGO or corporation. The poor people come and help each other to overcome poverty. And the key here is competent leader,” he said. (CBCPNews)
