Porn users really searching for God, says priest

PASAY City, May 2, 2015 –- Porn and God? These two don’t even seem fit to share the same sentence, but as a priest reveals, people who watch pornography are really looking for God – they just don’t know it yet.

“When you look at the problems we have today like porn..what is the desire there? It is a desire for intimacy..The man is looking for God, actually,” said Fr. Mariano Agruda III, prior of Our Lady of Hills Center for Spirituality.

Calling porn consumption an activity driven by a “desire that has lost its bearing, its focus”, the Carmelite priest debunked the idea that knowing one’s deepest longings is like playing with matches: dangerous.

Seeing God as kontrabida

“[Many people believe] desires are dangerous. In our culture, aside from its being notorious for being associated with sexuality, it puzzles most people how desires point us to our God and how our desires remain unknown and unexamined,” explained Agruda.

“Most of us are conditioned to expect we will not receive what we desire…So why desire?” he said.

According to Agruda, many people even devout Catholics mistakenly see God as the “’kontrabida’ [antagonist] to our will, thinking, “God will go against everything I want. There is not common ground between what I want and what He wants.”

Desires are spiritual

Quoting one of only four women Doctors of the Church, St. Teresa of Avila, he said desires are “very important.”

“Great souls have great desires…If we do not even know what we desire, we can hardly be spiritual,” added Agruda.

According to the priest, the importance of having good desires cannot be stressed enough. He also encouraged the faithful to access “surface desires” by “following them downward” to see their true nature.

“All deep longings are spirtual. Our deepest desires shape our life’s journey…Ultimately, these can only be met only in God,” Agruda said. (Nirva’ana Ella Delacruz/CBCPNews)
