PNoy’s 2nd term bid bad for PH—bishop

QUEZON City, August 20, 2014—A top churchman believes President Benigno S. Aquino’s (PNoy) alleged “openness” to a second term in office will be the country’s undoing, and invites all Filipinos to act as one in condemning it.

“Let your grievances be heard. Tell the President you don’t want him extending his stay in office because it will bring his family name, his parents’ legacy—and our nation with it—to utter ruin,” said Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani Jr.

The bishop recently commented over Radyo Veritas that such an upsetting presidential mindset goes against the great legacy left behind by his parents, Senator Ninoy Aquino and former President Cory Aquino, who had worked so hard to ensure the restoration of democratic institutions in the country.

The prelate laughed at what Mar Roxas, a key PNoy ally, touted as widespread “clamor” to have his friend re-elected in 2016, dismissing it as “insanity”, and urged the Filipino public to voice out their disdain for a PNoy encore in Malacañang.

Bacani explained, “The openness of the president for another term is the single most serious reason why he cannot be given the chance to run again.”

According to the prelate, the 1987 Philippine Constitution—the legacy of his mother—expressly forbids the country’s chief executive from having another term.

“When the law allows for another term, the sitting president will spend his remaining years in office and public funds campaigning to ensure he or she gets voted again,” Bacani shared. (Raymond A. Sebastián)
