MANILA, August 22, 2014—Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz says president Benigno S. Aquino III’s one term in office is enough, adding that he is not convinced another term will be in the nation’s “best interest”.
In a recent interview over Radyo Veritas, Cruz explained that PNoy’s four years as Chief Executive have shown enough what he can and cannot do.
“No, it cannot be. I do not know why this has come out. This is a diversionary tactic…The public has forgotten about the PDAF [Priority Development Assistance Fund] and DAP [Development Assistance Program]. We are talking about his term extension,” said Cruz.
The prelate wondered how PNoy could even think of getting re-elected given what the president’s low approval rating.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over a move initiated by Caloocan Representative Edgardo Erice which aims to amend the present Constitution favoring Aquino’s presidential term extension.
CBCP President Archbishop Socrates Villegas said the bishops are against Cha-Cha (Charter Change) especially when it is motivated by the “wrong” reasons.
“I cannot lend support to constitutional amendments that merely serve the purposes of one office-holder or one class of persons,” Villegas stated.
According to him, constitutional amendments are justified only when they “redound to the benefit of the nation and address long-festering problems arising out of ambiguities in the Constitution.”
Villegas also stressed CBCP cannot support the proposed curtailment of the power of judicial review.
“Against the heavy hand of the State or transgressions of the Constitution by politicians, judicial review is the only recourse of the hapless citizen,” the prelate added. (Raymond A. Sebastián)
