TAGUIG CITY, Sept. 27, 2015—The Diocese of Pasig is planning to secure the Vatican’s nod to grant plenary indulgence to pilgrims who visit the Sagrada Familia Parish in Bagumbayan to venerate the replica of the Veil of Manopello, which is said to bear the face of the Risen Christ.
According to Fr. Danny Flores, the plan is to promote pilgrimages to the Sagrada Familia Parish from Nov. 23 to 21, 2016 during its Jubilee Year, especially after the enthronement of the replica of the Veil of Manopello in the parish last Sept. 14.
“Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara is working it out with the Apostolic Penitentiary that pilgrims who will visit the parish to see the Veil will receive plenary indulgence, after doing other usual conditions,” said Flores, who is on-loan from the Diocese of Rome.
‘Divine face of God’
“The plan is being arranged now by the Diocese of Pasig with the Holy See. Sagrada Familia Parish, because of the presence of the replica of the Veil of Manoppello, is a site for pilgrims to venerate the human and divine face of God,” he added.
Flores urged the lay faithful to venerate the replica of the Veil of Manoppello being the “Face of Mercy” during the Extraordinary Jubilee and Global Holy Year of Mercy which ends on Nov. 20, 2016.
Flores said devotion and veneration of the Holy Face of the Risen Christ brings about pilgrims’ inner peace, humility, healing, and forgiveness.
“Since the veil arrived, parishioners said they felt inner peace and unexplainable joy. There is also a story that a young girl recovered from dengue fever after one of the pilgrims who attended the enthronement prayed the prayer of the Holy Face to her and placed the stampita on her bed,” he added.
Only 2 replicas
The priest, however, admitted that the parish church is too small to accommodate the influx of pilgrims. The Veil replica was enthroned at a small chapel on the second floor of the parish building, which is only accessible via Director A. Bunye street.
“If resources would permit it, we hope to build a bigger parish that will soon be the Diocesan Shrine of the Holy Face of Jesus,” Flores said.
The enthronement of the Veil replica makes the Sagrada Familia Parish in Bagumbayan the second parish to host the Holy Face of the Risen Christ, next only to the Immaculate Conception Parish in Nampicuan, Nueva Ecija.
The replica of the Veil enthroned in Bagumbayan is one of the only two replicas in the world. It is a gift from Filipino-American devotee of the Holy Face, Daisy Teves, and Fr. Carmine Cucinelli, OFM, Capucin, rector of the Basilica of Volto Santo of Manopello, which houses the original Veil in Italy. (CBCP News)
