Pauline family holds first ‘Bible Encounter’ for parish youth

MAKATI City, March 14, 2014—In a bid to instill Gospel values among today’s youth, the Society of Saint Paul [SSP] launched recently its first ever Saint Paul Parish Youth Bible Encounter [SPPYBE] for the 312 parishes within the National Capital Region [NCR].

With the blessing and support of no less than Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle and NCR bishops, SPPYBE, like its counterpart the SSP Youth Bible Quiz held in schools, pits budding “Bible scholars” against one another in a metrowide contest that allows them to show off their Biblical IQ.

The Bible Encounter, which had officially kicked off in all the parishes under the Diocese of Novaliches on March 1, is set to begin in the parishes under the Archdiocese of Manila [RCAM], and the Dioceses of Cubao, Pasig, and Parañaque on March 15; and in the parishes under the Diocese of Caloocan on March 22, SSP priest Fr. Boogie Tacdoro told CBCPNews in an interview.

Tacdoro shared that those vying for the contest are young people between 12 to 18 years old, who have been carefully selected by the parishes’ Bible coordinator.

The contest is divided in three levels: Parish [Pre-elimination], Vicariate [Elimination], Diocesan, and Interdiocesan [“Battle of the Champions”]. Level one of the SPPYBE has the individual participants of each parish taking a written multiple-choice quiz.

From among these participants, only the top three winners get to form a team to represent their parish on the next round. As prize, each of them will get a certificate of recognition and a copy of the Bible.

Level two of the contest has these three competing with winning teams from the other parishes on the vicariate level, and so on, until they reach the Diocesan and Interdiocesan levels (6 teams). At this point, each team member will be assigned a particular Bible category, a question from which he or she should be able to give the right answer to orally.

The first category covers the Old Testament, the second category includes the Gospels, and the third category lumps together the Acts of the Apostles, the Letters of St. Paul, and the Book of Revelation. All of the questions are lifted from SSP’s Book One of St. Paul Bible Trivia, and the official Bible versions to be used as reference throughout SPPYBE are the New American Bible (including the Revised Edition – NABRE), the New Revised Standard Version (Catholic Edition), and the Biblia ng Sambayanang Pilipino (BSP), Tacdoro explained.

Each team member who gets past the Vicariate level will have a certificate of recognition and a copy of the Bible Trivia Book 2 for the team. Prizes for the Diocesan level per team include P5,000 in cash for the first placer, P3,000 for the second placer, and  P2,000 for the third placer, plus a certificate of recognition for the winning parish.

The overall champion team brings home the P10,000 Grand Prize, a trophy, and a chance to join the Fifth St. Paul National Bible Quiz in the 35th Manila International Book Fair in September 2014.

Except for the “Battle of the Champions” which will be held at the SM North EDSA Skydome on May 31, 2014(Saturday) the Feast of the Visitation of Mary, from 9 in the morning until 12 noon, venues for the other contest levels will be determined by the dioceses’ respective bishops.

Tacdoro is positive that through SPPYBE, more of Catholic youth will be inspired to read Scripture.  (Raymond A. Sebastián)
