BAGUIO City, Jan. 16, 2016 – Because kids imitate nearly every move of parents, a priest reminded married couples this morning that they are in the best position to model mercy and forgiveness to children.
“Parents, you are the perfect teacher for mercy and forgiveness to your children,” said Fr. Abner Santos, SDB, main presider over the opening Mass of the Couples for Christ (CFC) Rejoice in the Lord Weekend at the CAP John Hay Trade and Cultural Center on Saturday, Jan. 16.
According to the priest, being forgiven and to forgive does not just feel good but is a “reason to rejoice.”
Compassion and justice
“Many are struggling to ask for forgiveness, all the more are [some] having difficulty in forgiving. And so we pray for them,” explained Santos, who is a cousin of former CFC International Council member Arnel Santos.
Hand in hand with mercy and compassion, the priest stressed, is justice.
“Compassion, forgiveness but don’t forget justice,” said Santos, going on to tell a story of a son who promised to come home at midnight after a party but ended up knocking on their door at 1 a.m.
“[Earlier, the father said], ‘If you are late, you will sleep outside. When the son was knocking, the father told him, ‘Stay outside, you sleep there. He did not give in to his son’s pleading,” narrated the priest.
‘God of justice’
“After some time, the father went out with a pillow and slept beside his son…And we have a God like that father,” said Santos, Vice President for Don Bosco Technical College Mandaluyong Pastoral Affairs.
“[Jesus] is the God of Justice, the justice of God, it’s Jesus Christ. We are supposed to pay for our sins and justice must be served and who is that justice? It is Jesus Christ,” he added.
As he closed, Santos expressed his gratitude to the Lord for “this wonderful experience of His love and mercy.”
Some 2,000 CFC members from all over the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Australia, Europe, and the Middle east were present at the event. (Nirva Delacruz / CBCP News)
