Pangasinan youth honor Mary with songfest

DAGUPAN City, Pangasinan, September 9, 2014 – The Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan (ALD) Youth Ministry celebrated the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary by serenading her with songs as part of a song-writing contest titled “Sulat Awit para kay Ina on September 7 – 8.

Some 1,600 people gathered at the Most Holy Rosary Parish in Calmay, Dagupan City to listen to the song entries live with the song “Inang Mapagpakumbaba” from the Vicariate of the Epiphany of the Lord emerging as the winner.

Performed by the Jesus of the Nazarene choir, “Inang Mapagpakumbaba” was composed Danlee Nagma with arrangements done by Bro. Samuel Edmar Ma. De Erit, MMHC.

The other song entries were “Mahal kong Inay” from the Vicariate of St. Thomas Aquinas; “Mary, Mother of Humanity” from the Vicariate of St. Dominic; and “O Maria, Dakila kang Ina” from the Vicariate of St. Vincent Ferrer.

The winners for the song contest were determined through a combination of the judges’ personal choice which comprised 70% of the criteria and online voting through Facebook likes and Youtube views which comprised 30% of the points.

The songs were also played during the Saturday Catholic program of the Archdiocese, “Lingay ed Tawag” (Response to the Divine Call), through the Social Communications Ministry in which the listeners got the chance to vote for their favorite Marian song entries through text messages.

A living rosary and a vigil followed after the announcement of winners. (Sher Pauline Palola with reports from Edward David Medina)
