MANILA, Oct. 14, 2016- A total of 59 awards in 8 categories were recently presented to outstanding communicators and media outfits at the recent 38th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at the Star Theater of the CCP Complex in Pasay City.
“We hope every act of communication is mercifully done. This is the only way that could evoke change,” said Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle of the Archdiocese of Manila, evoking CMMA’s theme for the year, “Communication and Mercy: A Fruitful Encounter,” based on Pope Francis’ message for World Communications Day.
Hall of Fame Awards were also given to those who have been winners for at least five years ; the Serviam Award, for groups and individuals who transmit Christian values through media-based programs; and the Pope John Paul II Award, for a group or individual who uses media creatively to uphold Christian values.

Positive Filipino values
When CMMA was organized in 1978 by Jaime Cardinal Sin, the awards pertained to only four (4) media fields: print, television, radio and film. Advertising, as a separate category, was included in 1979.
With the coming of internet and mobile phones, CMMA included digital platforms in its 2001 categories.
‘Rock’ trophies explained
CMMA establishes itself upon a “solid” foundation of Christian positive values as “rock trophies” are given to honor the country’s best values-oriented media work. The Rock is a symbol of the CMMA’s steadfast commitment to the good values. “You are Peter, and upon this Rock, I will build my Church” (Matthew 16:18).
The upward movement of the curved figure represents CMMA’s vision of “a transformed Philippine society” through the responsible use of mass media. The Mirror represents the Christian character of mass media, the reflection of the beauty and truth of Christ through audio-visual media that promotes total human development.
Meanwhile, the harmonious relationship between the two figures represents Mary and her son, Jesus who is the first Communicator, “the Word made flesh Who dwelt among us”. (Carl Jamie Simple S. Bordeos / CBCP News)
