MANILA, July 7, 2014—Quiapo’s “other church”, the Basilica Minore de San Sebastián at the Bilibid Viejo-Hidalgo-Legarda junction, will be hosting several activities in preparation for its “big day” on July 16, Wednesday, the “Solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel”.

To mark the occasion, the San Sebastian community is set to launch the “Guapa Festival” in honor of the shrine’s beloved patroness, whom devotees lovingly refer to as “Reyna ng Quiapo” (Queen of Quiapo).

Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with the iconic scapular that comes with it, has since become popular among many Filipino Catholics even before the Carmelites founded their first missions in the Philippines. (Raymond A. Sebastián)
