MANILA, August 12, 2016— An official of the Church’s prison ministry has called for an independent investigation by the country’s top human rights body after an explosion in Parañaque City Jail killed 10 prisoners, including two “high-profile” Chinese inmates held for drug-relate cases.
Rodolfo Diamante, executive secretary of the bishops’ Commission on Prison Pastoral Care, said to be effective, a probe into the incident must be impartial, independent and thorough.
“There should be an independent and in-depth investigation on what, why, how it happened,” he added.
With the spate of extrajudicial killings that has been reported in recent weeks, he said the public cannot rely on police investigations.
“Let the CHR (Commission on Human Rights) look into it,” he added.
