MANILA, Feb. 19, 2014—Many people may automatically associate the word “vocations” to preaching priests and praying nuns, but an upcoming national convention for vocation directors wants to change all that and focus on the unique role lay people play in the Church.
This April 22-25, vocation promoters are set to gather for the 24th Directors of Vocations in the Philippines (DVP) National Convention with the theme, “The Call for Lay Collaboration in Vocation Promotion in the Year of the Laity” at the St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary, Jaro, Iloilo City.
‘Regular people’ in the Church
Powerhouse speakers like Novaliches Bishop Teodoro Bacani, Jr., D.D. and Fr. Jose Vera Cruz Quilongquilong, SJ are lined up to discuss the special ways so-called ‘regular people’ breathe life into, animate and broaden the horizons of the Church.
An unmistakable ‘Year of the Laity’ flavor lends color to the entire gathering, with sessions like “The Theology of the Laity and the Changing Role of the Laity in the Church”, to be given by Bishop Bacani; “The Emergence and Significance of Lay Missionaries in the Church” by Fr. Quilongquilong; and the third talk, “Some Initiatives and Approaches in the Engagement of the Lay in the Promotion of Vocations to Priestly and Religious Life”.
Organizers also invited Fr. Pat Aborde of the Diocese of Tagum and Mr. and Mrs. Francis and Menchie Calingasan of the Diocese of Novaliches to share on the topic of vocation.
Workshops on lay collaboration
Two workshops will also be held. The first one titled, “Identifying Helps and Constraints in Lay Participation in the Life and Ministry of the Church”, will be facilitated by Fr. Alfredo Manlangit, Jr., Sch.P., DVP Executive Secretary for Religious Men. The second one will focus on “Laying down principles and conditions to encourage lay collaboration in vocation promotion” and “Drawing up a strategy to engage the laity in vocation promotion”.
Fr. Rochester Charles Resuello, DVP National Coordinator will facilitate the workshop.
To inspire the entire proceedings, the message of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, for the World Day of Prayer for Vocations last January 15 will be read by Imus Bishop Reynaldo Evangelista, D.D.
Vocation directors and directresses, as well as lay vocations promoters are all invited to register for the convention for P5,500.00 per person. Deposits may be made to Bank of the Philippine Islands, account name: Directors of Vocations in the Philippines, account number: 49-530529-92. The registration fee will include accommodation, food and the convention kit. Deadline for registration is March 14.
