MANILA, Nov. 23, 2015— A Catholic bishop has joined the growing chorus calling for the ouster of Manila International Airport Authority general Manager Jose Angel Honrado over the bullet-planting scandal.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo became the latest Church official to criticize Honrado over the latter’s management of the controversies surrounding the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

“People that are incompetent need to be replaced. There are many reasons why the NAIA has been judged as the world’s worst airport. Now, isn’t that enough proof of incompetence?” Pabillo said.

On Friday, the prelate also signed a petition on the global online platform, change.org, calling on President Benigno Aquino III to fire Honrado and put an end to the “laglag-bala” scam as means of extortion.

The petition by Filipino migrants’ rights watchdog Migrante International blasted Honrado’s failure to resolve the scam which has victimized many travellers, including tourists and overseas Filipino workers.

The group added that airport chief’s dismal performance also resulted in the poor maintenance of the NAIA facilities, choked-up runways, and lack of surveillance equipment.

“All of which have contributed to NAIA gaining notoriety as the world’s worst airport for three consecutive years,” part of the petition stated.

To date, the three-week old petition has already gathered around 11,870 signatories. (R. Lagarde / CBCPNews)
