LIPA City, Batangas, July 31, 2014—Attention, songwriters and aspiring musicians! The Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCD) of Lipa is organizing a songwriting contest for Saint Teresa of Jesus’ upcoming fifth birth centenary.
Besides coming up with a new music piece with a markedly Filipino twist honoring St. Teresa, the competition seeks to impart the richness of her teaching through music, arouse a renewed devotion to her, and to hone Filipino talents in the realm of religious songs.
The contest, which is organized in cooperation with the Sub-Committee on Sacred Music of the Archdiocese of Lipa, is open to all amateur and professional songwriters who are Filipinos or of Filipino descent. The composition must be an original work and may be a collaboration of up to three songwriters collectively treated as one contestant.
Each participant may submit a maximum two entries (entry shall mean one musical work). Music may not exceed four minutes in length including intro and extro; must not contain melodies similar to that of a published, released or recorded song in the Philippines or abroad; and must be unpublished (not signed to a publishing company) at the time of entry.
Entrants will use any of the two selected lyrics (“Let Nothing Disturb You” or “Sapat Na Ang Diyos”) as the theme.
Let nothing disturb you
Nothing affright you
All things are passing
God never changes.
Attains to all things
Who God possesses
In nothing is wanting
God alone suffices.
Saint Teresa of Jjesus
Huwag kang mabalisa
Huwag kang mangamba
Lahat ay lumilipas
Diyos lang ang walang kupas.
Sa tiyaga matatamo ang lahat
Kapag nasa iyo ang maykapal
Walang kulang sa’yong buhay
Sapat na ang Diyos.
~ Santa Teresa de Jesús
Words not part of the selected lyrics are not allowed, including introductions and explanations. Minor amendments on the words/rephrasing of the sentence are allowed, but not to the extent of deviating from the original meaning.
The melody of an entry shall be final once submitted and may not be altered or modified. It must be appropriate to the celebration and suitable for use within liturgy.
The song can be performed by the participant or may have another vocalist to perform it.
One or a combination of musical instruments may be used.
Incomplete entry form will not be entertained. Entry forms may be obtained by emailing email@example.com.
All entries must be submitted on or before October 1, 2014.
OCD Lipa and the Organizing Committee take no responsibility for damaged, misdirected, lost, stolen, late, insufficient postage entries.
Notification will be given to the winning entries and will become property of OCD Lipa.
The winning Song will be the Contest Piece for the STJ500MUSIKAwit Choral Competition in the Archdiocese of Lipa in 2015.
