Lea told: Gay unions not answer to divorce

MANILA, Aug. 27, 2015—A Catholic blogger maintains rising divorce rates among traditional marriages does not justify same-sex “marriage.”

In his recent blog post, Dr. Quirino Sugon Jr., a physics professor and writer, points out the inappropriateness of justifying same-sex “marriage” on the grounds that many traditional marriages end in failure anyway.

The Catholic blogger stresses there is no real connection between what the Broadway star called “being gay in a loving, committed, faithful union” vs. “straight, marrying and divorcing umpteen times”, given that both are equally bad and abominable in the eyes of the Lord.

Sugon reminds Salonga that homosexual unions and divorce are both forbidden in the Bible, and cites Leviticus 18:20-23 and Leviticus 20:10-13 for the Scriptural condemnations of homosexual acts, bestiality, and like sexual perversions.

Double negatives

“We should not compare between two negatives, between different shades of grey. Rather we should compare between a positive and a negative, between light and darkness, between obedience and sin,” he says.

Sugon’s blog post is in response to recent statements made on social media by acclaimed Filipina singer-actress Lea Salonga, who is a vocal supporter of same sex “marriage.”

Leviticus 18:22-23 reads: “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; such a thing is an abomination. You shall not have sexual relations with an animal, defiling yourself with it; nor shall a woman set herself in front of an animal to mate with it; that is perverse.”

In the case of divorce, he references Mark 10:6-1, which has Christ, God Himself, saying that a man and a woman who enter the conjugal covenant in effect becomes “one flesh” whom no human must separate.

Divorce = Adultery

According to the blogger, Jesus went so far as to put divorce in the same level as adultery, warning: “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Sugon further notes what is worse than all of these is when people invert the order of things and call light darkness and darkness light.

Light ? darkness

Echoing Isaiah 5:20-2, the blogger writes, “Ah! Those who call evil good, and good evil, who change darkness to light, and light into darkness, who change bitter to sweet, and sweet into bitter! Ah! Those who are wise in their own eyes, prudent in their own view!”

Quoting Jesus, he says: “And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be” (Matthew 6:23).

Sharing the sentiments of many netizens, Sugon takes offense at Salonga’s tendency to “use the Bible against the Bible,” and to gloss over clear Scriptural pronouncements against homosexual acts in an effort to justify what, he believes, can never be justified.

The blogger then challenges the Broadway star to make her own Bible minus those paragraphs, sentences, and phrases that condemn sodomy.

“But this is not an original idea,” he said. “There’s already the Queen James Bible. Perhaps, Lea Salonga can use this Bible and start her own Church of Homosexual Religion.”

Twisting God’s words

Meanwhile, Anna Cosio of Filipinos for Life “finds it funny” that Salonga accuses netizens of “twisting her words” when she was the one who did the same to Jesus’ words.

“But wait, has she finally come to her senses? She mentioned the ‘love your neighbor’ quote in light of same-sex ‘marriage,’ and now she says: ‘When I said ‘all-encompassing’ I meant that everyone is deserving of God’s love, regardless of their sin.’ she asks.

“Is Ms. Salonga finally admitting that engaging in same-sex intercourse is a sin, but that we should love our neighbor despite their sin? Have we finally come to something we could agree on?” she continues. (Raymond A. Sebastián / CBCP News)
