MANILA, Sept. 10, 2015 – Local brother knights have pledged to support the call of Pope Francis and the Knights of Columbus (KC) Supreme Council to help refugees from the Middle east who are fleeing to Europe by the thousands.
“Aside from our charitable works that we could offer in the people [refugees] there, we should be involved not only spiritually but also financially help them,” said Justice Jose Reyes, Jr., President of Knights of Columbus Fraternal Association of the Philippines, Inc (KCFAPI) and North Luzon State Deputy.
He added, “Because of the situation now in the Middle East particularly in Syria and in Iraq, we encourage our brother knights to offer prayers in that regions.”
KC members in the Philippines have also received a letter from Supreme Knight Carl Anderson asking for financial assistance. He says, “Every penny of your donation directly supports humanitarian assistance and raising awareness for persecuted Christians and other religious minorities, especially in the Middle East.”
Reyes said the KC Supreme Council in the U.S. has been providing considerable financial assistance to the refugees and he encouraged all the KC members in the Philippines to do the same for the greater glory of God.
According to a recent Catholic News Agency report, KC will supply food to thousands of families that have been displaced by the ISIS takeover of Mosul and Nineveh in Iraq.
Established in the country by Fr. George J. Willmann, SJ in the 1930s, the Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest fraternal association of Catholic men with Philippines having the biggest membership growth in the entire Order.
