MANILA, August 9, 2014 — If celebrities trend on social media networks, why can’t a saint? A group of young Salesians are calling on everyone who has ever been inspired by St. John Bosco to join the online campaign of making #HappyBirthdayDonBosco trend in time for the saint’s birthday on August 16, Saturday.

“We want Don Bosco to trend on social media because when he was alive, he was at the forefront of social communications. He used the playground, theater, pulpit, plaza, and the press to spread the Good News all for the service of the young people–the very heart of his mission,” SDB campaign manager and coordinator Br. Juvelan Paul Samia in a recent interview with CBCP News.

To mark the 199th year of the saint, who is also known as “Father and Teacher of Youth”, the group launched the birthday social media campaign, encouraging believers and devotees to intensify their social media activity using the hash tag #HappyBirthdayDonBosco at 12:00nn (GMT+8 ), August 16, Saturday.

The group also call on the public to promote the initiative’s thunderclap page on social media networks; and to retweet and share statuses from the hbDB2015 accounts:

An initiative of 11 young Salesians: 3 Salesians from the Postnovitiate House in Canlubang Laguna and 8 from the Seminaryo ng Don Bosco Paranaque, the project aims “to promote to general awareness the person and the gift of Don Bosco.”

According to Samia, it also aims to “bring Don Bosco to the internet, or at least on Philippine web scene.”

St. John Bosco, who is more popularly known as Don Bosco (The Italian term ‘Don’ is a title for priests), was born nearly 200 years ago.

With a special love for young people, he trailblazed various initiatives to address the needs of poor and abandoned girls and boys.

“…More than this, he was a teacher, father and friend of countless young people,” Samia added. (CBCP News)
