Lisa Ito-Tapang, chief of the research, education and advocacy of the CEC in a statement said, unlike other environmental awards, GBK intends to recognize the efforts of small organizations, individuals and communities in preserving and defending the environment from plunder and abuse.

Ito-Tapang says, what is unique with the GBK is that it has a human rights component.

GBK is open to all Filipino citizens, organizations and institutions, who have demonstrated extraordinary ability and effort to protect the environment and people’s welfare, whether in form of advocacy, campaigns, education, research, technology development, community services, mass media or cultural work.
