Ligaya Acosta, Ph.D. has reiterated what scientific studies have long been pointing out: that contraceptives are not as safe as originally thought, calling on the powers behind the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Law to quit giving credence to what she junked as the “myth of contraception.”

“Our government should stop telling lies to our people, that contraceptives are really safe. No, they are not safe,” said the she in a recent Radio Veritas report.

Backed by findings from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Acosta explained contraceptives can cause cancer (breast, cervical, and liver) and high blood pressure, among many other potentially fatal health risks.

Acosta, who also serves as regional director of the Human Life International (HLI) for Asia and Oceania, shared IARC’s concern for the public over the consequences of the “contraception deception” the Philippine government allegedly perpetuates given its support of RH Law.

More evidence

“There are lot more scientific studies, so we have a shipload of evidence to rest on that contraceptives really do cause cancer and high blood pressure,” she added.

Not wanting just her words to be taken for it, Acosta invited consumers before buying contraceptives to countercheck her claims by reading the literature that goes with them, which detail the many side effects the product can give their users.

Apart from their adverse effects on the human body, particularly of women, the renowned pro-lifer  went on to stress that contraceptives harm the users’ spiritual well-being as well.

Pro-death to pro-life

According to her HLI profile, Acosta was a longtime contraceptives advocate who became a staunch pro-life activist after her stint as program manager of the government’s Natural Family Planning in 2004, when she discovered the deadly deception of the “international pro-death propaganda.”

Since her conversion, the doctor had done extensive research, including no less than acquiring firsthand testimonies of frontline public health workers (midwives, nurses, and doctors), and from victims themselves.

Church’s stance

The Catholic Church maintains that Natural Family Planning (NFP) Method is the only morally acceptable way for couples to determine the number of children they intend to have.

In the landmark encyclical “Humanae Vitae” (“Of Human Life”) relased in 1968, then pope. Paul VI, reaffirms what the Church has always taught : that life and the procreative and unitive nature of conjugal relations, is sacred.

Love, responsibility

Parts of the hot-button papal document read: “Love is total — that very special form of personal friendship in which husband and wife generously share everything, allowing no unreasonable exceptions and not thinking solely of their own convenience. Whoever really loves his partner loves not only for what he receives, but loves that partner for the partner’s own sake, content to be able to enrich the other with the gift of himself.” (Raymond A.
