MANILA, Sept. 4, 2015– Aside from those who have procured an abortion, an accomplice also faces excommunication, a church official said.

CBCP President Archbishop Socrates Villegas said under the church law, accomplices to an abortion carries the penalty of automatic excommunication.

“Nae-excommunicate din yung actively involve sa abortion… so yung mother na nag-abort then yung medical practitioner o hilot na nag-execute ng abortion,” he said.

On the other hand, Villegas said those that can be considered as accessories to the commission of abortion are not automatically liable to being excommunicated.

According to him, the penalty in being considered accessory to abortion still depends on the level of involvement of an individual.

“Kung nandoon siya sa actual act of abortion o kaya hindi magkakaroon ng abortion kung hindi siya nagbigay ng pera pang-abort, talagang kasama siya doon,” said the prelate.

However, he said that individuals that encouraged a mother to commit abortion are not automatically excommunicated.

“Meron pa din moral judgment yung girl kasi,” the CBCP head pointed out.

The CBCP yesterday reiterated that committing abortion remains to be “grave and serious wrong” and subject to excommunication. (READ: Abortion remains a ‘mortal sin’)

He made the statement after Pope Francis issued new pastoral guidelines for the upcoming Year of Mercy by allowing all priests to absolve the sin of abortion.

Some media reports, however, interpreted guidelines to mean that the Pope has softened the Church’s stance on the issue.

Villegas then clarified: “This does not make the sin less grievous.”

“What it does is make the mercy of God more tangible through the ministry of the Church,” he said. (CBCPNews)
