QUEZON City, Aug. 5, 2016 – A congressman said the divorce bill advocated by the Gabriela party-list is expected to be dismissed in Congress.

According to Buhay party-list Rep. Joselito “Lito” Atienza Jr., the divorce bill or House Bill No. 2380 sponsored by Gabriela is opposed by many lawmakers.

Filed in Congress five times since 2005, the divorce bill has never been passed.

According to Atienza, an intact family is extremely important to society.

‘Stronger family unit’

“We will watch out for this because we are against this (the divorce bill). Buhay partylist will definitely not support divorce law as this is contrary to what we are fighting for, a stronger family unit ,” said Atienza.

He added the bill will not benefit the country as it destroys family life, especially the relationship between husbands and wives.

“I’m sure there are a lot who are not for divorce. When we talk about it, that’s when we’ll be able to analyze and unpack all the issues why divorce will not be good for the Filipino family,” explained the congressman in Filipino.

Thinking about the Filipino family

According to Gabriela Reps. Emmi de Jesus and Arlene Brosas, they filed House Bill No. 2380 again because they want to amend some parts of the Family Code of the Philippines in order to legalize divorce.

By now, only Rep. Feliciano Belmonte Jr. of Quezon City and Rep. Geraldine Roman of Bataan are supporting the divorce bill.

According to the latest survey of Laylo Research, 67% of Filipinos are opposed to divorce. (Glenn Figuracion / CBCPNews)
