MANILA, Aug. 27, 2016 — The Church’s social action arm hailed a government order to distribute the vast agricultural lands of Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac City.
The bishops’ National Secretariat for Social Action supports the “decisive action” of Agrarian Reform Sec. Rafael Mariano in distributing the lands, which was only partially covered during the previous administration.
“The pro-poor agenda of the present administration deserves to receive due acknowledgment,” said Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive secretary of Nassa, also known as Caritas Philippines.
Mariano on Thursday ordered the distribution of 358.22 hectares of lands in Bgry. Balete and Cutcut owned by Cojuangco family’s Tarlac Development Corporation.
Nassa has long been at the forefront of the Church’s campaign for genuine land reform in the country.
Mariano said the land set to be distributed is outside the 4,915 hectares HLI property subject to CARP (Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program) by the Supreme Court.
He, in effect, denied the protest filed by Tadeco for lack of merit and ordered the said property be subject to the agrarian reform program.
Mariano directed the DAR provincial office of Tarlac to immediately proceed with and complete the land acquisition and distribution process over the said properties. (CBCPNews)
