KATHMANDU, Nepal, May 9, 2015—Despite the devastation, Caritas Nepal was able to reach 31,000 people, but continues to do its part in helping more survivors of the 7.9 magnitude earthquake with much needed shelter, water, and hygiene kits in seven of the most affected districts.

“We have already reached 31,000 people with temporary shelter kits and helped 2,092 families with food,” says Caritas Nepal director Fr. Pius Perumana in an emailed statement, stressing the agency plans to reach over 175,000 in the next two months.

Most marginalized

“In every district we are prioritizing the most marginalized families, such as those whose lives have been most affected, are living in extreme poverty or have family members with disabilities,” he notes.

“As a Church agency, we have strong local connections and partnerships in every affected district, which enables us to mobilize and respond with speed, whilst reaching the most marginalized communities in the country,” he explains.

Perumana points out Caritas Nepal’s effort to work swiftly, and to ensure families have protection from the rain, as well as cold temperatures, especially before the monsoon rains start in June.

“I’m truly humbled by the generosity and support of our whole global family in Nepal’s time of need. I would like to thank our global community for their prayers, support and gifts,” he declares.

Given the immense needs of the survivors, Perumana says Caritas Nepal seeks to team up with affected communities in order to rebuild lives, livelihoods, and communities long beyond the initial emergency response.

More than eight million people are reportedly affected by the earthquake. With over 190,000 homes destroyed and 175,000 more severely damaged, shelter is a major priority.

Backed by the international Caritas network, Caritas Nepal is working in seven of the most affected districts: Gorkha, Okhaldunga, Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchok, Nuwakot, Lamjung, and Dhading, as well as Kathmandu valley. (Raymond A. Sebastián/CBCP News)
