MANILA, March 23, 2016— Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle told a group of prisoners in Manila to never give up hope.
The Manila archbishop met with inmates and presided over a Mass at Manila City Jail (MCJ) to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy on Holy Wednesday, March 23.
“Let’s not lose hope. All of us, including me, commit mistakes. We are all capable of betrayal but let’s not forget that we’re also capable of loving,” Tagle said in his homily.
“We sinned like Judas and Peter but let’s not forget that we can still be like Jesus. who, even if we’re not worthy, he took care of us as his friends,” he said.
Prior to the liturgical celebration, the cardinal, along with Papal nuncio Archbishop Giuseppe Pinto, led the opening the “Holy Door” of the MCJ chapel.
“In entering the door of mercy, enter into the heart of Jesus and there you will experience how God loved us and offered His life. We still have hope,” Tagle added.
Tagle also asked the inmates to pray for their families and loved ones, “who are also hurt”, that they experience hope and God’s mercy.
“And to all of you here, open your hearts to other people. You are like one family here. Spread God’s love to each other (through service),” he said.
After the Mass, the inmates sang the “Prayer to St. Francis” that left Cardinal Tagle teary-eyed. (Roy Lagarde/CBCPNews)
