MANILA, Nov. 25, 2015— The Catholic bishops’ migration head on Tuesday lashed out at President Benigno Aquino III for supposedly being insensitive to the plight of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Bishop Ruperto Santos, chairman of the CBCP Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People, particularly hit Aquino’s response to the bullet-planting scam, saying that the latter is “out of touch” on the issue.

“The Aquino government has been ignoring the problem. And we can see here that he is not compassionate, merciful, and heartless for our OFWs,” he told Manila archdiocese-run Radio Veritas.

The prelate was reacting to Aquino’s recent statement downplaying the “tanim-bala” incidents, saying it has been “sensationalized” and was blown out of proportion by his critics.

The chief executive also said the number of the bullet-planting scam victims is only a small percentage of the airport passengers.

“It’s obvious that our president is out of touch of the situation. Either he is misinformed or he is fed with sanitized information regarding the issue,” he stressed.

The prelate earlier called on the OWFs and the public not to vote for candidates who are insensitive and indifferent to the extortion racket in next year’s general elections.

“Don’t vote for candidates who are not compassionate to those who had been victimized, particularly overseas Filipino workers, as well as tourists,” Santos said. (Roy Lagarde / CBCPNews)
