MANILA, July 26, 2016 – A prelate recently raised the alarm over the possibility of international terrorists gaining a foothold in Mindanao, stressing the need to focus on developing and rehabilitating the region.
“[This is what is making us nervous that] acts of terrorism will also reach Mindanao in an organized, international manner and [this is also means that] we really have to also bring a both lasting peace agreement so that we can develop the island of Mindanao,” said Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma in Filipino and English.
The prelate on Thursday urged the passing of a peace agreement in the hopes of stopping international terrorists from entering the country.
He emphasized the need for President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration to drastically improve the livelihood and living conditions of people in Mindanao.
According to Ledesma, there have already been over 800 incidents of terrorist attacks across the globe since the start of the year.
In recent news, newly-elected President Duterte junked the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) and approved an inclusive peace road map that includes a new law that an all-Moro body will draft to replace the BBL.
The BBL was a bill under the Aquino Administration which sought to create a new autonomous political entity called the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region. (Ysabel Hilado / CBCPNews)
