BACOLOD CITY, April 26, 2014 — To celebrate the gracious event of Blessed John XXIII’s and Blessed John Paul II’s canonization, the Diocese of Bacolod dedicates the days leading to the Solemn Feast of the Divine Mercy “as days of Tribute and Thanksgiving to the Lord.”
Through the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, from April 24 to April 26 a Triduum of Masses was celebrated at 5:30 p.m. in honor of the two Popes at the Diocesan Shrine of the Mother of Perpetual Help in Bacolod City.
The theme for April 24 was “Life and Works of Blessed John XXIII” and the main celebrant of the mass was Fr. Salvador Barcelona, PhL. On April 25, the theme was “Life and Works of Blessed John Paul II” with Fr. Ronald Quijano, SThD, as main celebrant. This was followed by a feeding program for street children. “The Documents of the Vatican Council II” was the theme on April 26 and the main celebrant was Msgr. Victorino Rivas, JCD. A procession was held around the Bacolod Cathedral in Burgos, Ferrero and Fortitch Streets, in honor of John Paul II after the mass.
On April 27, the day of canonization of the two Popes there will be a motorcade around Bacolod City at 8 a.m. This will be followed by a concelebrated mass at the Diocesan Shrine of the Mother of Perpetual Help at 10.30 a.m. At 4 p.m., there will be a live telecast of the canonization ceremonies from the Vatican at the Bacolod Public Plaza.
The film “Karol, the Man who became Pope” and “Karol, the Pope, the Man,” will also be presented at the Parish Shrine Hall after another mass, which will be celebrated by Bishop Vicente Navarra at the San Sebastian Cathedral.
At the John Paul II Tower-Museum in the Bacolod Reclamation area, another Triduum of Masses has been scheduled to be followed by a medical mission activity. This landmark is the exact place where Pope John Paul II delivered his public address to Negrenses during his papal visit in 1981.
Great contributions to the Church
Fr. Ronald Quijano, Academic Dean of the John Paul II Institute, said that it is only fitting that the Diocese of Bacolod celebrates with the whole Church the canonization of the two Popes.
The priest cited their great contributions to the growth of the Church by bringing it to a constant dialogue with world.
“John XXIII convoked the Vatican Council II that brought renewal in Christian life with his two principles ‘Aggiornamento’ (updating the faith) and ‘Ressourcement’ (going back to original source of faith),”Quijano said, citing how the late pontiff brought about great change in the Church.
Before becoming pope John Paul II was actively involved in the deliberation and drafting of the documents of Vatican II, Quijano said.
“He gave us great magisterial teachings on the human person, sexuality, marriage, and the family,” he added. (Fr. Mickey Cardenas)
