MANILA, August 4, 2015— Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle will install Fr. Reginald Malicdem as rector of the Manila Cathedral next Friday, Aug. 14.
The date coincides with the 420th anniversary of the elevation of Manila as an archdiocese.
The cathedral is considered the mother church of the archdiocese and the church of the archbishop.
The historic structure has recently undergone renovation and was a venue for the Mass celebrated b y Pope Francis during his visit to the Philippines in January this year.
Malicdem, 37, is the youngest priest to become rector of the country’s first cathedral. It is also his first parish assignment although he will remain as private secretary to Tagle.
Tagle is also set to install the other newly-appointed rectors of major shrines and churches in the archdiocese in separate ceremonies this month.
Msgr. Hernando Coronel will be installed rector of Quiapo Church on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m.
Coronel was previously rector of the San Carlos Seminary in Makati City.
His installation will be preceded by the launching of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting’s “One Good Vote” campaign at 5 p.m. at the Benedict Building within the Quiapo church compound.
Fr. Genaro Diwa, meanwhile, will be installed rector of the National Shrine of St. Michael and the Archangels in Manila’s San Miguel district on August 15 at 6pm.
It is one of the prominent churches in Manila, included in its pastoral jurisdiction is the Malacañang Palace.
Diwa is currently the executive secretary of the CBCP’s Commission on Liturgy.
Other shrine rectors to be installed are Fr. Larry Abaca, Shrine of Mary Queen of Peace or EDSA Shrine on Aug. 8, at 5:30 p.m.; Fr. Andy Lim, Shrine of San Lorenzo Ruiz in Binondo, and Fr. Wilmer Rosario, Archdiocesan Shrine of Espiritu Santo in Sta. Cruz, Manila.
